Idle Breakout is an idle strategy game, based on the classic Breakout. Players aim to destroy bricks by directly clicking on them or using balls. Players do not have to continuously control the game; instead, balls auto-bounce, breaking bricks and scoring points even when the player is not actively engaged. Each brick is numbered, indicating the hits required for its destruction. Upon destroying all bricks on a level, the game progresses to the next level, where bricks have more starting health.
Currency earned from breaking bricks can be used to purchase a variety of balls, including Basic, Plasma, Sniper, Scatter, Cannon, and Poison Balls, each offering distinct strategic benefits. The currency can be also spent on upgrading the speed, power, and other abilities of the balls.
Power-ups, which provide significant temporary benefits, are acquired in two primary ways: initially, players can earn up to five different power-ups by breaking a specific minimum number of bricks. As the game progresses, power-ups also begin to appear randomly on the game board and can be acquired by clicking them in time. These power-ups include: Cashed Up, which doubles the amount of money earned; Click Frenzy, which makes clicking spawn extra balls; Demon Core, which repeatedly damages all bricks; Snow Ball, which summons a ball with constantly increasing speed and power; and 2X Gold, which doubles the amount of gold acquired from golden bricks.
Gold, collected by destroying special golden bricks, plays a crucial role in advancing gameplay. Players have the option to restart the game at any point, claiming the accumulated gold and gaining "prestige", which increases their starting money. The claimed gold can then be used for permanent upgrades, enhancing aspects like ball speed, power, and cash bonuses for level completion.
The game also introduces black bricks in later levels, which can only be damaged after all other bricks are destroyed. Smashing these bricks grants BB points, which can be spent to participate in challenging boss fights against single, robust bricks. Success in these battles yields skill points and additional gold, further expanding the upgrade options. Skill points can be spent on a separate set of various permanent upgrades.
